Speaker Bio
Dr Michael Flower is a Consultant Academic Neurologist at UCL’s Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, specialising in neurogenetics and repeat expansion disorders, particularly Huntington’s disease (HD). His research focuses on using long-read sequencing to investigate somatic instability across different tissues and biofluids. Dr Flower studies the mechanisms by which DNA repair pathways influence the progression of repeat expansion diseases, including the activities and interactions of repair proteins. He develops innovative assays to measure DNA repair activity and is actively involved in creating new biomarkers to track somatic instability within the central nervous system. Additionally, his work explores potential therapeutic strategies and allele-specific interventions targeting repeat expansions.
